Scabal Star Award 2026: Celebrating Bespoke Talent in Mainland China
On 31 July 2026, Scabal announced the winner of the inaugural Scabal Star Award in Mainland China, celebrating exceptional craftsmanship, creativity and the individual expression of bespoke tailoring.
Among dozens of entries from across Mainland China, a jacket created by Shenzhen bespoke house SUITLUTION stood out to take the inaugural award. Crafted in Scabal Doupioni silk, the jacket demonstrates how an exceptional cloth can become the starting point for a highly personal expression of style.
A Cloth with Character
At the heart of the winning piece is Doupioni, a distinctive silk known for its irregular slubbed texture and subtle, muted sheen.
Created when two silkworms spin their threads within the same cocoon, the resulting filaments naturally overlap and intertwine, creating delicate variations and small nodes throughout the cloth. Unlike smoother silks, Doupioni does not seek uniformity. Its appeal lies precisely in these natural irregularities.
Light catches the surface differently as the garment moves, revealing a depth and tactility that cannot be replicated by simply reproducing a colour or pattern.
For SUITLUTION founder Xinxin, this quality was central to the choice of cloth.

The decision to use Doupioni was not simply about its rarity or prestige. Instead, it reflected an appreciation for the honesty of the material: allowing its natural imperfections to remain visible while giving the wearer space to become the protagonist of the garment.
