the pursuit of perfection
For over 85 years, SCABAL has been synonymous with the art of luxury fabrics, combining nearly five centuries of weaving expertise with innovative design and technological excellence.
From pioneering the incorporation of diamonds, gold, and platinum into cloth, to the creation of exclusive collections such as the Noble Wool Club, SCABAL’s fabrics are celebrated worldwide for their extraordinary quality, exquisite handle, and timeless elegance.
the establishment of scabal
1938
The founder of SCABAL, entrepreneur Otto Hertz, opens his textile merchant business in Brussels, Belgium.
Over the years, this second-generation cloth merchant brought international buyers and manufacturers together including the cloth house Wain Shiell, our made to measure workshop, and famous Yorkshire mill in England.
This new enterprise was named the Société Commerciale Anglo Belgo Allemande et Luxembourgeoise (Commercial Society of England, Belgium, Germany, and Luxembourg), or SCABAL for short.
the invention of bunch
1946
With so many international clients, Mr. Hertz realized he needed an easier way to transport his cloths across the globe. The solution was to invent the now ubiquitous fabric bunch, which soon became the industry standard for both tailors and merchants.
The most famous of these early cloth collections was our Superlana collection which can be found today safely stored in our Bunch Archive.
The Dali project
1971
SCABAL commissioned Salvador Dali to create a set of paintings inspired by his vision of menswear in the year 2000. The result was 12 uniquely individual images of future fashion that are some of the artists most interesting creations.
Dalí’s proposition was that all styles would co-exist peacefully so that every person would be able to individualise his or her own look, as he would have done himself. This philosophy is shared with the company, as we are always looking for ways to break new grounds in the field of fabric design with the independent spirit of an artist.
These distinctive paintings continue to inspire our design teams today and shape our forward-thinking mindset.
The Legendary Savile Row
1972
The decision was made to position ourselves at the very heart of the sartorial world: Savile Row. A purpose-built store opened at No.12—an address we proudly occupy to this day.
From this central London location, rooted in our heritage, we continue to outfit gentlemen in impeccably tailored suits that honour tradition while embracing modern style—crafted from our extensive luxury fabric collections, spanning timeless British cloths to contemporary weaves designed for today’s wardrobe.
SCABAL on the silver screen
It was around this time that scabal began providing fabrics to the film industry, and a close relationship formed with America’s Hollywood and Broadway scenes, as well as London’s famed West End and Film Studios, a connection that continues to this day.
We are very proud that Scabal cloth has helped Costume Designers bring to life many iconic characters over the years.
bower roebuck, huddersfield
1973
SCABAL acquired a leading fabric mill in Huddersfield, a region historically celebrated for producing the finest cloth. For centuries, the mill’s waterwheels have been turned by its clear, soft waters, crafting fabrics of unparalleled quality.
Over the following 50 years, SCABAL has continually experimented, invested in state-of-the-art equipment, and pushed the boundaries of fabric development and innovation.
More than just a mill, it stands as a testament to genuine craftsmanship and uncompromising quality.
made to measure tailoring
1989
After many years of collaboration, SCABAL acquired Tailor Hoff, a specialist made-to-measure workshop in Saarbrücken, Germany. Following over 30 years of excellence, SCABAL relocated its tailoring production to Mangualde, Portugal, establishing a state-of-the-art single-piece production line. This enables the creation of a wide range of suits, jackets, trousers, and outerwear with unparalleled precision.
Supported by our workshop experts and made-to-measure specialists, we offer garments that can be personalized in over 200 ways, ensuring each piece is truly unique for our clients.
super fine wools
1990
At our Huddersfield mill, SCABAL became the first company to transform a 16.25 μ wool fibre into Golden Carat, an exquisite and ground-breaking Super 150’s cloth.
In the years that followed, SCABAL set the bar even higher debuting the Super 180’s and even Super 200’s quality cloths. The pinnacle of these efforts is Summit, a collection so fine that even today it cannot be accurately measured.
special editions
2000
Drawing on nearly 500 years of expertise from our weaving mill and cutting-edge technological advances, SCABAL became the first company to weave precious materials directly into the fabric itself.
Our pioneering innovation began with the Diamond Chip collection, incorporating the extraordinary brilliance of diamonds into the cloth. It was soon followed by collections featuring Gold, Lapis Lazuli, and even Platinum, each creating a fabric that is as remarkable in substance as it is in appearance.
noble wool club
2015
Executive Chairman Gregor Thissen conceived the Scabal Noble Wool Club to redefine how fine wool is perceived—moving beyond numbers to a holistic approach that values the sheep’s environment and overall wellbeing.
Technically classified as Super 200’s wool, this exceptional cloth is exclusively woven from fibres sourced directly from family-owned farms that meet stringent ecological and animal welfare standards. These farms specialise in rearing Saxon Sheep, celebrated for producing the world’s finest merino wool, with the fibres themselves meet exacting criteria for resilience and quality.
By sourcing wool of the highest calibre, SCABAL has created a cloth that is both remarkably durable and supremely elegant, offering an exquisite handle, unmatched drape, and an enduring aesthetic.
olympic games
2020
Scabal was honoured to dress the Belgium Olympic and Paralympic teams for the Tokyo Olympics. Over 400 made to measure outfits were delivered for athletes, coaches, and support staff all with personalised details commemorating this historic event.
50 Years On Savile Row
2022
In 2022, SCABAL marked a landmark 50 years on Savile Row, London—half a century at the heart of British tailoring.
To celebrate this milestone, the Scabal Mill crafted a limited-edition Savile Row collection of 50 exceptional articles, each a testament to the artistry, precision, and timeless elegance of British tailoring.
Commemorative events and celebrations took place around the world, honoring half a century of craftsmanship and style.
the future of clothing
2023
As SCABAL approached its 85th Anniversary, we sought to revisit the visionary concept that inspired the original Salvador Dalí collection: What would menswear look like in the year 2000? To explore this, we partnered with the Swiss think tank W.I.R.E., producing a book that examines the future of clothing through the lens of creative insight, societal shifts, and emerging trends, presenting a series of compelling potential scenarios.
In parallel, we commissioned the acclaimed artist John Armleder to create a work that embodies his vision of fashion’s evolution. The result is a striking spherical brass globe, accompanied by a bespoke repeat-pattern wallpaper—both designed to provoke reflection, inspire dialogue, and invite personal interpretation of the future of style.
